ČUMIL OF BRATISLAVA

Čumil is a beloved, whimsical bronze statue installed in 1997 in Old Town Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. It is one of the most photographed objects in this cultural city. This was a fun project for JoAnn, when she was commissioned by a Japanese real estate developer for his new subdivision of residential homes in Palm Desert, California. As part of his ongoing success in selling his properties, he has something unique and notable installed where it will be seen by the potential buyers. At a time when many new subdivisions were going up, it was a way for his to be remembered in addition to its other appeals. He requested her to replicate Čumil out of concrete and to create the same illusion. The challenge was this project was prior to active social media. She only had two photos pulled off the internet for reference. Their angles and low resolution provided little detail. Fortunately, accuracy wasn't expected or necessary. Čumil's look-alike revealed himself during the sculpting process. The first two images in the gallery are in Palm Desert. The other photos are the original bronze Čumil by Slovak artist Viktor Hulik.
