This oversized replica of an original sand spike, discovered at the base of Mt. Signal, was commissioned by contemporary American artist Allan McCollum for inclusion in his multi-venue museum exhibit, Signs of Mount Signal, inSITE2000. It is made up of a welded steel armature and concrete, which was textured with customized texture pads created specifically to replicate the sand spike. Based in New York, McCollum has produced numerous public art projects in the United States and Europe, and his works are held in over ninety art museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.
