SAN DIEGO
WILD ANIMAL PARK

In 1997, the San Diego Wild Animal Park (now the San Diego Zoo Safari Park) opened "Heart of Africa," a 30-acre, multi-layered exhibit featuring diverse African habitats and more than 260 animals, including cheetahs, rhinos, and giraffes. Visitors could explore different African regions, including a forest with okapis and wattled cranes, a savanna with antelope and kori bustards, and a waterhole with flamingos and monkeys. Featured here are large, simulated fallen trees designed by JoAnn for the Colobus monkey colony, which was located on its own little island. They contain heated floors and lock-down doors. Artificial vines, termite mounds, tree stump feeders, a carcass feeder, and ostrich eggs were also a part of her scope of work on this project.
